Is Bipolar Disorder overdiagnosed?
As a practicing psychiatrist, I'm alarmed at a study last week that revealed a 40 fold increase in the incidence of childhood Bipolar Disorder over a 10 year period (from 1994-2003).  Moreover, most of these kids, who are falsely labeled in my view, have been medicated with potentially dangerous psychotropics, on which little research has been done regarding safety and effectiveness in this age group!  What's your view??

Name: "Amy"

I agree. Having worked on a child psych ward as an LPN, I am amazed and disheartened by all the kids who were herded like cattle in an out of our unit, and hastily diagnosed with bipolar and other suspect disorders, and medicated with major psych drugs.  I thought our counselors did about as well as they could with what they were working with, but many times we couldn't even get their parents to participate.  Somebody needs to do an expose on this practice, because it is rampant.  I am now working in a different field of nursing and don't feel nearly as conflicted when I put my head on my pillow at night.
